When we were house shopping last year the biggest appeal to our neighborhood is the great creek that sits along side it. We were told that the HOA was going to build a kayak club and launch, and I told Craig that one of our first major purchases would have to be a kayak. Well it took a while, and the kayak club was never built, but we finally went kayak shopping a few weeks ago. When I walked in the store I was convinced we were going to get your typical kayak. That was until I saw the Hobie Adventure Island set up on the floor. It was love at first sight. This kayak has attachable outriggers and a 20 foot mast with a full sail. We went home and did more research and were pretty much sold after watching a video on youtube of people sailing 12 knots on one. For those non-sailors, that's really fast! Faster than our 30 foot sailboat ever went. So last week we went out and bought 2 AI's, which were delivered on Tuesday. However due to the holiday we didn't have a chance to try them out until today. The one small hitch we had was that we don't have a trailer for them yet, but we do have some wheels that attach to the back of the boat so you can drag it down the road. Michaela walked/danced with me while I pulled the boat to the entry point.

Those who read this blog on a regular basis know that Michaela HATES her
life jacket more than just about anything on this Earth. So I decided I would try my last possible trick and buy a Dora
life jacket. She wasn't a huge fan of it on shore, but we told her if she wanted to ride the boat she had to wear it and she put it on right away. She didn't complain about once during the entire 4 hour trip!

We decided that we would just use the kayak part for our first trip out. We weren't sure how wide the river would be or if there would be enough wind for the sail. I'm glad we did, because we hit some narrow and shallow spots along the way. It took a little getting used to the pedal drive system. Hobie's have a foot pedal system that allows you to paddle with your feet, freeing up your hands for fishing or steering with the rudder. The amazing thing is that you go really fast! The store upgraded us to the turbo fins, which fly. And the rudder works great, turning very quickly with just a small touch.

Michaela and I as we were heading out of our neighborhood.

Craig went a lot faster than me because Michaela often slowed me down when peddling.

Michaela loves splashing in the water. The problem is that when she leans over my leg like that it makes it impossible for me to peddle. And I can't paddle with my hands because I'm scared she'll fall over and so I hold onto her
life jacket. So Craig ended up pulling up alongside us and towed us a little ways.

I kind of liked getting pulled alongside him. That's the other great thing about the peddle drive system - you can raft up and still be moving.
Michaela wanted to try paddling for a while.
I don't think she actually propelled us anywhere, but we were having fun enjoying the scenery.
On the way back Michaela started to fall asleep across my legs. Again, this meant Craig did all the work because my legs weren't capable of peddling. But she did wake up after a little while and let me help Daddy out. Michaela's favorite part of the trip
occurred when we got back into our neighborhood. We heard a splash and turned to see a huge alligator climbing into the water. He had to be at least 10 feet long. As he sank down into the water so we couldn't see where he was going Michaela asked "More alligator?" Craig and I just peddled faster, unsure of where he would pop up next. I have to admit, even I was a little nervous at that point. But all in all it was a very
successful trip. I can't wait to set the sails up next!
